Virtual Cemetery

I have online virtual cemeteries for several cemeteries but worked on uploading all the Voigts and Ritters interred at Bethany German Lutheran, Laurel Hill East, Laurel Hill West, Westminster, Mount Vernon, Mount Peace and Leverington cemeteries. Many were reinterred from dysfunctional cemeteries such as Glenwood located at 27th and Ridge, Odd Fellows at 24th and Diamond, American Mechanics at 22nd and Diamond and the German Lutheran cemetery that once was located at 31st and Lehigh Ave.

After all these years of researching, I still cannot wrap my head around the fact these cemeteries were closed, and bodies moved as a result of “eminent domain” so housing projects could be built in its place. First, city politicians and urban planners banned new burials stating the cemeteries were overcrowded, then the cemeteries fell into ruin from lack of funds. Secondly, those same politicians and planners condemned the cemeteries because they viewed these cemeteries as undeveloped land and it was cheaper than tearing down neighborhoods or spending large amounts of money for commercial property.

Mass exhumation began. Bodies were dug up. Few notices were placed in the newspapers to alert descendants of the plan to unearth their ancestors. Families who discovered the city’s plan went to court with deeds in hand stating they owned the land where their relatives were buried, but were told by the courts that “the deeds” only gave rights to burial in that space and not ownership. The courts determined it was more important to provide housing, highways and parking lots for the living than preserving the cemeteries of the dead. Families demanded that the city pay to have their loved ones reinterred at the cemeteries of their chosen. The city agreed so some families had them reinterred. Because there were few notices in the newspapers and most families were left unaware, the courts allowed the mass exhumation of bodies and had them reinterred in mass graves. Since they thought it was “too expensive” to move tombstones, the city sold them to contractors who threw them in the Delaware to act as a foundation for the Betsy Ross Bridge.

On a more personal note, I remember my Uncle Gene telling me how the caskets were piled up on each other. He said, some of the caskets were old and deteriorated to the point where you could see the decomposed bodies. He was horrified that the contractors in charge of exhuming the graves were careless and displayed a lack of dignity for the deceased.

In 2013 as  modern day contractors were working on a playground built over the once burial ground of Odd Fellows, they encountered 28 caskets of remains that were never exhumed and reinterred prompting the creation of new laws that made the courts stop new developments and appoint state archaeologists to properly document, exhume and reinter at the city’s expense that which should have occurred in years past.

Sometimes I feel like a detective doing genealogy work. Creating the virtual cemeteries then adding in the ancestor’s information had given me the opportunity to review dozens and dozens of death certificates and burial records to confirm where they were buried and of course following the paper trail if the ancestor’s remains were moved from the original place of burial to their present place of burial. Though the Ritter line had their share of early deaths, the Voigts had an overwhelming number of early deaths especially children under the age of 10 years old. The records clearly display the dangers of childhood at a time when vaccinations and antibiotics were yet to be discovered. Whereas several women in the Ritter line lost their lives to “Childbed Fever”, the Voigt line lost children to diphtheria, Typhus, spinal meningitis, scarlet fever, pneumonia, and asthma.

Genealogy Update

I have been busy researching, organizing, and updating my ancestors’ cemetery records. Hopefully, I will soon have an updated link where you can access these burial records directly on this page. Recently, a large collection of records was transferred to me from previous managers, and I have spent countless hours reading and translating these documents. It always amazes me how much information you can obtain about a person and their family from a single burial record.
One thing that particularly stood out to me was the frequency of births within these families. Some women had a baby every year; while some of these infants survived, others were stillborn or died shortly after birth. In fact, many of these children did not live past the age of five.
This was true for Mary Voigt Ritter, the sister of my 3x great-grandmother, Elisabeth Voigt Keller. Mary had a baby every year of her marriage, starting with her first child born ten months after her wedding to Henry Ritter. Tragically, just two weeks after giving birth to her sixth child, Mary died of “childbed fever.” Seven weeks after her death, the infant also passed away from “malnutrition.”
Mary was Henry’s third wife, and he already had several children before their marriage. Shortly after Mary’s death, Henry took a fourth wife and fathered three more children. Today, Henry and Mary Ritter are buried at the Bethany German Lutheran Cemetery in Manayunk.
Mary and her sister Elisabeth were also sisters to Henry C. Voigt, who was killed at the Battle of Little Big Horn. Unlike his sisters, Henry is buried at the battlefield site in Montana.

In Honor of Those Who Serve.

When my great grandmother Mary Keller Gallagher was alive, she visited Bethany German Lutheran Cemetery each and every Memorial Day in honor of her father, my great great grandfather, John G. Keller. John G. Keller was a German Immigrant who came to this country with his parents, Jacob & Susannah Keller and two brothers, older brother Jacob, and younger brother Frederick. He served in the Civil War and was present at the Battle of Gettysburg. He died in 1897. In the earlier part of the 20th Century, this tiny backyard cemetery was the site of a yearly Memorial Day Celebration complete with a Honor Guard. My grandmother, Anna Marie McCaffery Gallagher began attending these celebrations with her mother-in-law after the marriage to her son, my grandfather, William Joseph Gallagher II.

I remember my grandmother telling me stories of how loyal our family was to the military. Case in point, I was born into a very military patriotic family. Most of the males in my family served our country. There is not a war where at least one of them served their country. As a child growing up, I remember my grandfather stating he lived by the code; God, Country and Family. Recently, I discovered I had at least 80 family members interred in this grave yard. It is difficult for me to wrap my head around that simple fact. The entire cemetery is the total sum of a regular size backyard in this Manayunk neighborhood. Today, I kept with tradition and visited the cemetery. As you can see in the above photograph, the flags fly proudly. To all who have served and are still serving, I applaud you because without your sacrifice, we who live in this country would not have the taste of freedom, we often take for granted. After I visited the cemetery, I took notice of a sign outside of Bethany German Lutheran Church which is located up the street from the graveyard. The sign said, "every one is welcome to worship". Since the doors were open, I walked inside and attended the 10am service. I sat in the same church my ancestors once worship. What a serene feeling.

Bethany German Lutheran Cemetery

After researching the various death records for my family, I am convinced that most of the grave yard known as Bethany Lutheran Cemetery located at Pechin & Martin Streets in Roxborough/Manayunk is filled with my family's German relatives. The grave yard is located between houses on a block. It is the size of someone's backyard. I counted more than twenty relatives interred in its ground. Henry B Ritter and three of four of his wives are interred there in addition to several children from all of these wives. His third wife was my relative Marie/Mary Voigt.

Most of the Kellers and Viogts are also interred in these grounds.
