In The News

It has been a long week at work. We are down two counselors. One counselor is on her honeymoon in South America and another counselor resigned to go back to school to get his second Master's Degree. I have been working long days. Thankfully, I love the work I do which makes it easier.

Josh is registered for classes at Villanova for the Fall. He has orientation the end of August. Josh is my late bloomer. However, it is never too late to return to school. I am evidence of that fact since I have three degrees. Speaking of which, I signed up for two classes myself at Bryn Mawr College for the Fall. I try to keep up with the latest developments in my field. Of course I need 25 credits per year to work @ FBHS and 40 credits every two years to keep my license to practice. I will be in school until I retire or die, whichever happens to come first:)

I started the 5th book in an eight book "Outlander" series called "The Fiery Cross" by Diana Gabaldon. Book four "Drums of Autumn" was the best book thus far so I could not wait to start book five. The series of Outlander books are nearly 90 or more chapters each so I generally read a different book in-between however book four was so good I skipped the in-between book to continue on. The series is as followed which I highly recommend if you have an interest in Scottish, English and American History with a little magic.
  1. Outlander
  2. Dragonfly in Amber
  3. Voyager
  4. Drums of Autumn
  5. The Fiery Cross
  6. A Breathe of Snow and Ashes
  7. An Echo in the Bone
  8. Written in My Own Heart's Blood
My son Joe reads as many books as I do evident by how many I send him. We have wonderful discussions about books. My niece Nicole is an avid reader as well and we also discuss books on occasion.

Shaun, Rita and the kids are arriving today at the shore. Though I am only staying until Sunday, they will be using the shore house until next Wednesday. Today, the community is celebrating "Halloween in Summer" with trick or treating and a kids' party at the clubhouse. The community has a lot of great activities for kids and adults alike. This is a great place for kids and I am happy my grandchildren are taking advantage of it. This house is my hideaway for peace and relaxation however this house is for the use of those I hold dear to my heart. Children should have a happy childhood filled with memories. It is an amazing feeling when we pull up to our house on a Friday evening and see the lights lit around our house with the wooded background and wet lands with the decorated  lighthouse "light" lit in front rotating its warm light around the property. All the lights we installed this year work on solar power and are warm and inviting to the eye.  We will BBQ this afternoon and have a fire tonight where we will all sit around talking. I noticed my parents' car in their driveway outside of their house so I suppose they came down. I know my sister will be down to her house with two of her four grandchildren later this afternoon. My parent's house is one block over whereas my sister's house is two blocks over the opposite way. We are all in the same community.

So there we have it., a post on the news.

My Adorable "Tall" Granddaughter

Closure

Dear Frankie,

Remember me? I am your older sister. The sister that babysat you. The sister who picked you up from school. The sister who came to your home and took you to my home when your first marriage fell apart. The sister who is Godmother to the daughter of your first wife and to the son you borne together.

So why I am writing this post here and now?

You remarried and had three more kids. You took yourself back to school and became a nurse. You moved out of Philadelphia and closer to our mom & dad or maybe it was mom & dad who moved closer to you. I do not remember and it is really irrelevant to this post. You are the fifth and last child born in our family therefore your children are the youngest grandchildren our parents have. I am not sure if you realize it or not but your children are pretty fortunate to have their grandparents in their lives whereas my children are the oldest grandchildren because I am the second oldest child in our family of five children therefore when my children were growing up our parents were running the family business and did not have the time to spend with my children.

Again why am I writing this post?

I thought about writing you a letter. I thought about calling you on the phone. I decided it really does not make a difference because you cannot change the past. I have had some things on my mind and lately I have come to recognize that I cannot hold on to these thoughts and feelings. I also know myself very well and I am not one to easily forgive if I decide to forgive at all. However, I do believe in putting the "stuff" on the shelf in order to move forward so this is my main purpose of writing it here because I am a family genealogist and I believe in recording history. Or maybe it is anger & hurt. I really do not know.

The last four years were rough for myself and my children. I managed to survive because I had  a pretty solid support system which consisted of both family and friends. Where were you? I never received a telephone call, a letter, not even a card of encouragement and/or prayer. You were not present in court. You did not drive with me or sit beside me. I did not receive a hug or a hand of support and/or love.

We are suppose to be family and family means being there for the good times and the bad times. It does not mean "silence". Of course, I know that I cannot make you think, feel or behave in any manner and just because we are blood does not mean there is support or love. However, as a human being a hand could have been extended.

I am not writing this post to insult you or rip you too pieces as a brother, father or even a man. A person's character is their character. But I do feel a little hurt because you managed to attend a funeral in the middle of the day for a friend of our parents and you even managed to get on a plane and fly out to the other side of the country for our uncle's funeral despite your job or kids. What you did not do is reach out a hand of support to me, your sister who resides in the same state in the last four years. NOT EVEN ONE TIME.

So Frankie, it is time to "let go". I will not carry any baggage that does not belong to me. Your actions or lack thereof speak volumes so I must let you go. I doubt very much I will ever forgive you but I am willing to live with that decision because I know I will place you on a shelf and move forward with my life.

Now that I have expressed my feelings, feelings that I carried for several years, this chapter of my life is closed.

Peace Out!

It's Complicated

I was the counselor on site this past weekend therefore I stayed home from the shore. Truth be told, I probably would have stayed home anyway because my father-in-law who is up from Florida became sick and was admitted into the hospital with pneumonia. Becoming sick has only increased his dementia so there are some discussions that need to be discussed and some decisions that will need to be made. Right now, he is medically stable despite the fevers.

Working on a weekend is a challenge physically and emotionally because the counselor on site on the weekend is responsible for all the patients and it can be pretty daunting at times. Add three classes that one teaches on Wednesday night, Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, and the week is jammed packed so there is very little time for one self let alone the responsibility of others.

I find myself at the stage in life where I have some responsibilities on both ends. I have little grandchildren and I have elderly parents especially my father-in-law who is failing physically and mentally. I worry about him and I also worry about my husband because I can see the impact his father's health has on him. He has not been sleeping, spending many hours at the hospital, trying to work a fulltime job and the inevitable denial and fear that comes with the knowledge that your parent may not be around much longer.

And then I tell myself that despite the stressfulness of the current situation, we have experienced much worse and we managed to survive intact.

And there is much to appreciate.

Coming home from work or the hospital this past weekend and seeing your sweet little granddaughter breaking out in the biggest widest smile when her eyes meet yours and seeing the excitement radiate through her entire body as she anticipates you reaching out and picking her up for hugs and kisses is an amazing feeling.. I was so happy to have Aubree visit this weekend with her parents.

I do not believe there is a better feeling than holding a small child in your lap singing, playing and rocking to sleep.

Well. Perhaps that feeling is a close tie with sitting, walking and exploring with an older grandchild. It is so wonderful to experience things through the eyes of a child. I think that is one of the many reasons I like to vacation/travel with my older grandchildren especially the eldest who shares my love of exploring "everything" history.

When I started out writing this post I titled it "It's Complicated" and true to form when I write what I feel within I tend to write some of the conflicting thoughts and feelings that arise as well as staying focused on the things I am grateful for. I never want to write when emotions are high and I always want to write addressing both points of any conflicts. I started to write this post when I saw some pictures and read some things that felt like "a punch in the gut". I placed the post in draft with the knowledge that I would give myself 24 hours to process my thoughts and feelings before I would return and continue writing. I knew I had to go off to work and teach class as well as maintain emotionally intact because I had my son and grandchild at my house. I also did not want to lash out because lashing out never resolves anything. Before I came back to this post, I did some research on favoritism in families, acceptance and anger. What I came across is a book that spoke to relationships in families and the bottom line is the bottom line I tell my own patients when in sessions and there is conflict within the family. "No matter how upset, angry or how much you try to change the other person, the only person you can change is yourself specifically your reaction to a situation and/or event".

The "punch in the gut feeling" triggered other times "I felt that same exact feeling" all the way back to childhood, teenage years, young adulthood and now again in middle age. For the most part, I addressed those feelings throughout the years. I did a lot of work on acceptance both of myself and others. I really do not understand why I had such a visceral reaction yesterday morning because I have been practicing acceptance but nonetheless it was triggered and though I know why it was triggered I did not know why I experienced such a deep strong reaction to the situation.

There are favorites in my family. There have always been favorites in my family so this is nothing new. The pictures of the family down the shore laying on the beach, walking on the boardwalks, and having seafood night in of itself were not the problem. The problem happened the weekend before when I planned a BBQ with my oldest son for my oldest grandson who had graduated from 8th grade. I planned it for Saturday down the shore at "my house" however some family members were going to a dance recital for another family member and another member was apparently working so I offered to change it to Sunday afternoon because they were coming down late Saturday night. I called my son who rearranged his scheduled and the plan was a Sunday BBQ for my grandson. When I told the family the BBQ would be at noon on Sunday I was met with resistance because of the time. I was asked if it could be later because they wanted to go to the beach. I told them I had to work on Monday therefore a late BBQ with the clean up involved would be tiresome for a early Monday workday. They said they were going to the beach so I rearranged the BBQ back to Saturday afternoon. Then, I was told they all decided not to come down at all because it might rain. It did not rain. I had the BBQ on Saturday afternoon complete with food, cake and balloons and besides myself, Bill, Shaun, Rita, Raina, Shaun and Nikolas the only family member who attended was my father-in-law who was up visiting from Florida.

So when everyone managed to get together one week later (it did rain), I had a strong visceral reaction followed by the same messages I experienced as a child, teenager and young adult. "What is wrong with me? I am not good enough. I am not worth it. What do I need to do to gain their approval?" The only message that was different is I wondered why my children and my children's children were not important enough?

When you see people in your family taking the time to attend funerals, celebrations, recitals or "whatever" for others whether family members or not, you question why the same amount of effort cannot be made for other things.

Acceptance

So you practice acceptance because you cannot change the way someone else thinks, feels or behaves but you can change the way you think, feel and behave and that is why I find solace in research and books because I want to feel peace within and the only way to feel peace within is to accept myself and accept others just the way they are. That being said, I also recognize that I must decide how that is going to look in my life. I need to figure out how to balance physical distance without emotional distance or emotional distance without physical distance. I also know that visceral reactions can easily lead to feelings of anger and despair so during my research yesterday I came across this book.

"The Dance of Anger, a woman's guide to changing the patterns of intimate relationships" by Harriet Learner.

"Anger is a signal and one worth listening to," writes Dr. Harriet Lerner, in her renowned classic that has transformed the lives of millions of readers. While anger deserves our attention and respect, women still learn to silence our anger, to deny it entirely, or to vent it in a way that leaves us feeling helpless and powerless. In this engaging and eminently wise book, Dr. Lerner teaches women to identify the true sources of our anger and to use anger as a powerful vehicle for creating lasting change."

My Journey

I came across a picture of you today. You were four years old, down the shore at my parents' house standing next to my father who sat on a chair with Sophia on the other side. Though I have come to some sort of peace within myself, the picture caused a wee bit of pain in my heart. Yes. I miss you more than you or anyone else will ever know.

Adversity can destroy a person or it can make a person stronger or wiser. I believe it has done the latter with me. There are not too many things that rattle my bones anymore because when you have had my experiences and had felt my pain, there are not too many things that could impact you. I no longer take things for granted nor do I get upset over the small things and when you really think about it most things are small and not worth the worry.

On the other hand, the pain I experienced has not made me bitter which is what I feared the most. The pain has made me more compassionate towards the pain of others. I am a better mother, grandmother, wife and counselor today. I have more patience. I look at people and see the inside no matter what the exterior may show. Mostly, I feel joy where there was so much pain. I laugh often. I experience each and every day and often times live daily life as if it were my last day on this earth.  I have faith in God and people. I am filled with love. I hold tightly onto hope.

I do not know exactly why I was not destroyed as a result of my experiences. There were some very dark moments when I did not know if I could hold on. I did somehow hold on and I am glad I did because the clouds did leave and the sun did shine again. I cannot go back and change anything but I can start all over. I extended my lease another ten months and in those ten months I will make a decision on whether or not I return home. The important thing is I continue to move forward love deeply and experience life on life's terms.
