Entrance to a plot of land purchased by Mr. Girard himself,
to bury any of the boys who may have been housed at the school and died. He founded a school known as Girard College, a home for fatherless boys.
What is interesting about this cemetery plot is you can tell exactly, when vaccinations for polio, diphtheria, whooping cough and various other childhood diseases were discovered, because the graves stopped at a certain point after several rows of interments.

This plot looks like church pews. How sad that so many died of diseases that we no longer worry about.
Pat,
My Uncle Jim Harker and his brother Al attended Girard College when they were young boys back in the 20's and 30's, they played on the soccer team for Girard and Uncle Al played in the world cup in the 1930's they were both from East Falls.
I am the HS art teacher at Girard College... thank you so much for posting these photos! I was just telling one of my students about the plot last week. I shared the photos with her today.
I am thinking about taking a group of students out to see the cemetery.
