"St. Joseph's Hospital - 16th & Girard Avenue - In 1849, Ireland was experiencing a... devastating famine, which sent people fleeing to the United States. For Irish immigrants who settled in Philadelphia, medical attention was desperately needed. To answer the growing medical needs, a substantial three-story home was purchased at the corner of 16th Street and Girard Avenue. This dwelling would soon come to be known as St. Joseph's Hospital, the oldest Catholic Hospital in the city of Philadelphia". Today, St. Joe's is a Drug and Alcohol facility.
