Another Day in the Life
Last night we watched fireworks in the distance from our balcony. Totally cool.
I survived teaching a bunch of interns the Addicted Brain. I think I lost one psychologist (intern) at "neurotransmitter". All in all, it went well except that the powerpoint did not want to cooperate, so I began winging it, while others got the powerpoint/computer/projector working. By that time, I had already covered half the information. Thank God, I was a science major way back when in that other life. Now I address behaviors.
Printed out all the necessary paperwork to apply for my license. Can you believe one written state exam cost 300 dollars, while the other cost 350 dollars? I am applying to take both, one for addictions and the other for mental health.
One step closer to Florida.
One step closer to a private practice.

Addicted Brain
My supervisor is on vacation this week, therefore, I was asked to teach the Addicted Brain complete with powerpoint to a bunch of interns in the gym with a microphone and projector. I went over the facilities powerpoint though I have my own which I teach the patients. I feel very intimidated. I know I have a strong background in science and recently acquired a strong background in addiction, but to teach interns? Lord, help me. Hopefully, I will not stumble over my words.

Boundaries
"Whatever you are willing to put up with is exactly what you will have". ~ Anonymous
Boundaries reflect how we love ourselves and what we value most deeply. Boundaries impact our capacity at work, with authority, with our money and our sexuality. Knowing when we want to say yes, when we want to say no, what feels like self-respect and where our own needs start and end are the foundations that build our boundaries, which control our lives.
In order to not deal with a changing relationship between ourselves and the people we love, people often commit to rigid boundaries or have no boundaries set at all. Where is the happy medium? How can we avoid being the "doormat" and the "bulldozer"?
Never learning that setting a boundary is equivalent to letting go of the outcome in any given situation.
Rethinking our boundaries is important, because if we are unable to keep commitments without constant resentment and you do for others in the name of "love", often means, "I love" is really "I feel obligation". Learn to sense and articulate needs. These are the parameters we expect from others as well as ourselves.

Today
I am in the process of taking a Genetics class. I have two classes left and I decided to take this class, because I have a strong interest in genetics. I have taken a genetics class based on the brain and behavior. This current class is based on overall Biology. It is also on the main college campus. I am still trying to figure out where the University of Penn begins and Drexel ends. I have never seen, so many buildings that take up Market, Chestnut and Walnut Streets.
If I need 25 credit hours per year for my employer, I may as well take something of interest.
Anyway, the discussions in class are really interesting, since many folks base their opinions on their own religious beliefs. As for myself, I am glad I have a choice. I do not allow religion to cloud my decisions.
Anyway or who,
Last night Bill & I stood on the balcony and watched a tornado touch down in the distance, then immediately get suck back up in the clouds. The winds were different last night. They seem to have been moving in all directions, north, south, east and west. We had to bring plants into the house and secure others on the balcony. Thankfully, they all survived. We are on the top floor and tornadoes have a habit of ripping off roofs. I guess if we saw/heard one coming in our direction, we would have had to go through the emergency exit to the stairwell for safety. We are perched high as it is and can look down upon the valley. On a clear day, we can see the highest buildings in Center City.
The storm came in like a demon in the sky.
Then greeted us with absolute beauty.

Mothers
I recall Rose Kennedy saying once to Jackie Kennedy that it was the mother who held the family together. It is true. The family unravels and falls apart if the mother does not hold it together. Mothers are not perfect creatures or have any special powers. However, I believe there is nothing more powerful than a mother's love. Of course, there are mothers out there who do not care and rather toss their children aside. I have seen it more times than I would have liked. Truth be told, I think fathers do not have the same emotional connection as mothers when it comes to children. Though, I believe in some instances this is not correct. I look at my eldest son who is so involved with his boys, I see that his father taught him a great lesson. When I hear how much my youngest son misses his daughter and that as a grown man sleeps holding her bear and using her blankets, I know his heart breaks. If he did not love her, he would not hurt so much. I witnessed the pain my middle son felt when his baby girl died in utero. He never got to hold her. I wish I had a magic wand and could sprinkle fairy dust to make it better, but I cannot. I can only offer my love, encouragement, strength, and hope. I do believe time will heal and things will be as they are suppose to be.
